Today's Deep-Dive: Manage My Damn Life

Episode description

Manage My Damn Life (MMDL) is an open-source, self-hosted front-end project designed for managing tasks and calendars, emphasizing user control over personal data. It operates as a user interface that connects to a separate backend server using the CallDAV protocol, which allows for interoperability with various services like NextCloud and ByCal. MMDL’s strength lies in its robust support for standardized data formats like VTODO for tasks and VEVENT for calendar events, ensuring data portability and preventing vendor lock-in. Key features include support for subtasks, enabling complex project management, and the ability to connect multiple CalDAV accounts and user accounts on a single installation. The project offers flexible viewing options, including list, calendar, and Gantt chart views, catering to power users and project managers. While currently in beta with a desktop-first focus and basic authentication, MMDL is actively developing towards full RFC 5545 compliance, enhanced usability with drag-and-drop functionality, and the creation of external plug-ins. The project aims to provide a transparent and controlled alternative to large commercial data management products, allowing users to maintain sovereignty over their most sensitive information.
